Over the Hill's off-roading simulation winches you in with a more laid-back take than SnowRunner's, but it'll still bite careless drivers

Over the Hill, a rather chillaxed take on brutal Saber Interactive off-roading sims like SnowRunner, is the latest game from vibesy driving enthusiasts Funselektor. The folks behind the likes of Art of Rally and Absolute Drift have assembled untamed wildernesses in the cold Canadian hills and the boiling desert of Algeria, before handing myself and Julian the keys to some 4x4s. Here’s our verdict. Read more

"We vibe coded a new Epic Games Launcher" because "programming is hard", announce company we're somehow supposed to see as a serious Steam competitor

Days after a report emerged about them imposing an "AI-first" production model on the devs of a new Disney shooter, Epic Games have released a new version of their launcher in preview form. It's been "vibe coded" with aim of making it "faster than the other guy". That other guy is Steam, something the yacht gag in the second paragraph of the announcement post makes even more obvious. Asha Sharma announces Xbox Labs project to "explore new technology," which sure sounds like tinkering with old games through AI

As part of Microsoft's ongoing, physics-ignoring push to do more business with thousands fewer staff, games chief Asha Sharma has announced Xbox Labs: a new umbrella for Xbox's R&D into the kind of game remixing and rejigging most visibly characterised by viralities like Halo for browsers, or Mario in Elden Ring. Both enabled, perhaps tellingly, by the AI-driven decompilation of the original source codes. Read more

Ubisoft’s Latest Restructuring Plan Puts Trials Developer RedLynx On The Chopping Block

Ubisoft has announced that it plans to shut down Trials developer RedLynx as part of its ongoing restructuring efforts, as well as reduce the workforce of its Skull and Bones studio, Ubisoft Singapore, by laying off 72 people. The closure of the Finland-based RedLynx is in a proposal stage, and Ubisoft says that because the studio isn't currently working on a new project, it makes more economic sense to close it down and retrench its 52 employees instead. Under Finnish law (via Kotaku), Ubisoft

GTA 6 Leaks Are Still Coming, Rockstar Labels The 2022 Hack “Weirdly Invasive”

Rockstar Games has reacted to the mass GTA 6 leaks, which began in 2022, with a top developer at the studio saying it "feels like somebody's wading through your dirty washing." Bloomberg published these comments from Rockstar developers on the same day that GTA 6 leaker CyberLeek posted yet another gameplay leak, saying it could be the last. "It feels like somebody’s wading through your dirty washing,” Rockstar North's Aaron Garbut said. “It’s like they’re inside your head. You see your early wo

"We are here to give you something to believe in": the former Disco Elysium devs of Summer Eternal reveal new RPG Red Rooster, a game of fire, water and alternate selves

Earlier this month, the former Disco Elysium developers of worker co-operative studio Summer Eternal sent me a 500-page anthology describing their new game Red Rooster. It's a 3D, real-time, third-person RPG you could broadly style as a spiritual Disco successor, working in the tradition of Planescape: Torment and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, but which also owes much inspiration to Baldur's Gate 3 and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. It takes place in a magic realist, "our-world-adjacen

GTA 6 Could Have Been Even Bigger And Released Years Sooner, But Then These Things Happened

A big new report revealed more details about Rockstar's long-awaited GTA 6, including how the game's scope was originally much bigger and that the game could have released years sooner. Bloomberg reported that when a small team from Rockstar traveled to Miami in 2015 to begin planning GTA 6, they envisioned the game spanning "big swaths of land across both North and South America." It was in development under the codename Project Americas at this time. The report went on to say that Rockstar wou

"This non-profit will be the 'voice of the gamers'" - Former Disco Elysium devs break new ground with player- and developer-owned studio structure

Elsewhere on the site, you can read a big reveal piece that outlines the new game from former Disco Elysium devs under the name of Summer Eternal - an "incendiary RPG" fusing the best bits of text-heavy isometric role-playing games with the world-building and player agency of an immersive sim. It's bold, it's ambitious, and it's still in development, and if it all comes off, it could be something really special. Read more
